The Final Battle Helfort War 5 eBook Graham Sharp Paul

SPOILER ALERT!!! I started this series and was instantly drawn in by the characters and what I felt was going to be an interesting series of stories. The first four books in this series delivered, then this one came along. The fifth book felt as if the author was just tired of writing the series and just threw it together. He could have EASILY written at least 2 more books in the series instead of cramming it into this final book. There is just too much going on in the book and it seems as if he is trying to cram it all in instead of carrying it over into another book.

Our hero is saved from his death sentence by some convoluted plot, then he is whisked off to a secret command and control center where fleet and Marine officers secretly plot to break the peace treaty between the Federated Worlds and the Hammers. Helfort is then on Scobie world running around trying to secure passage to Commitment. Once he is on Commitment he is running around doing missions to prepare for the large fleet invasion. The large fleet invasion happens and practically nothing is heard about it except a few starships crash on the planet, but other than that the reader has no clue what damage the fleet did or even if the whole fleet was destroyed. The book then turns into a series of running battles that are hard to keep track of until the very end where they all live happily ever after. C'mon there was so much potential for more and all we get is a "rushed novel" to finish the series.

If you truly must have this book then get it from a library or pick it up cheap because paying full price for it is not worth it. I would of had no trouble paying for two extra novels in this series if the author attempted to flesh out all the plots in this book and make them substantial like the ones in the first four books.

The Final Battle Helfort War 5 eBook Graham Sharp Paul Reviews

self published book to end an SF series. His military SF style is quite thorough and gritty. Nobody really wins in this battle, though. Which I believe is the point of the series.
I had been waiting for what seemed ages to finally get to read the end of Helfort's saga. This book series has been one of my favorites since the day I picked it up, and although I too enjoyed the space battles, the switch in setting to the ground and pound of warfare planet side was well done. As with all his other books in the series, Mr. Paul's writing comes off the page in a fast frenetic pace that has even slower parts moving quickly.

The plot itself is very strong, but perhaps not the strongest in the series. As some other reviews I have read, some of the "off-camera" battles you read about would have been fascinating to see. (One huge operation in particular I could mention, but wont to avoid spoilers.) However, this book, and series in general, is more about Micheal's path through an epic conflict. What really is the strength of this book, and series, is the ability to see the raw graduate from the "Battle at the Moons of Hell" change before your eyes as he endures the atrociousness of war. It is really something to see the hardened man he has become.

Finally, the author does a great job in the last acts of the book to make sure a predictable outcome doesn't happen. This ensures, as it did for me, an inability to put the book down when you reach that final act.

Overall, I would just like to thank you Mr. Paul for writing these books. These series will go down as one of the best sporadic buys I ever made in a bookstore those 3 years ago. I can only hope I get to read more of what you have.
Not sure why Graham Sharp Paul decided to self-publish this - a note on his blog makes it seem as if his publisher's didn't want to pick up the book. No idea why - the whole Helfort's War series was excellent and this book was no exception. Even book 4, probably the worst in the series, was still pretty good (it just went in a completely different direction than I think most people expected). This book concludes the series and actually does a decent job of wrapping things up. Overall, the feel of the series goes from STTNG to gritty space opera to depressingly-gritty infantry fiction and then to a somewhat surreal War of the Worlds desolate feeling by the end. However, despite the large changes in circumstances that happen in the series, everything still feels well done. The most jarring transition is in book 4, but the reasons behind it are all logical and felt well thought-out. Book 5 is definitely not the BEST in the series, but not the worst, either. It was a relatively solid ending to a good series.
Graham Sharp Paul's 5 book series comes to a satisfactory conclusion in this volume. The bulk of the story takes place on planet, with detailed descriptions of political and military machinations needed to tie up the plot lines. The characters are fully developed and believable. About the only thing which keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that the previous volume was marginally better in terms of plot flow. There were a couple of occasions where I thought this one could have been tighter. But this is a much better concluding volume than most extended series, since usually the author seems to want to just complete the job. Not so here; he upholds his previous standard of a well-conceived and executed story.
